Dream Street Diaries: Meet Joenn Lee from CasaBarro

Joenn Lee is a passionate entrepreneur, transforming her love for pottery into her ceramics studio, CasaBarro. In our interview with Joenn, she shares the unexpected journey that led her to this path and the profound connection she's forged with both her craft and the community.

You are an entrepreneur - was this what you always dreamed of doing?

While entrepreneurship in the pottery industry wasn't my lifelong dream, it unfolded during the pandemic when I stumbled upon its therapeutic nature. As I immersed myself in this craft, I discovered its ability to serve as a form of active meditation—a means to disconnect from the world's demands and reconnect with one's inner self. You really lose the sense of time! This unexpected journey has not only made me an entrepreneur but has also deepened my appreciation for the healing and transformative power of engaging in creative pursuits.

What made you decide to go for it and launch your business?

Launching CasaBarro was a natural progression that evolved very organically. It all began as a passion project, slowly growing and expanding until it started occupying not just my living room but even my car. As the demand for my craft organically increased, it became evident that there was a market for what I was creating, that people were loving what I loved creating! It was at that point, with the unmistakable signs of growth and interest, that I made the decision to turn my passion into a business venture.

What’s your favorite part about being an entrepreneur?

My favorite part about being an entrepreneur in the pottery realm is the profound connection I get to establish with both the craft and the community. Shaping raw clay into beautiful creations and asymmetrical shapes, brings me immense joy, but what truly enriches this experience is the newfound perspective it has given me on handmade objects. Through my journey, I've gained another level of respect for artisans and their incredible skills. Each handmade piece now holds a special place in my heart, and I view them from a different perspective—one of deep respect and admiration. Being an entrepreneur in pottery has not only allowed me to blend creativity, business, and community but has also granted me a heightened appreciation for the artistry and dedication of fellow artisans.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to follow their dreams but doesn’t know where to start?

Cliché but very true “you don’t need to see the whole staircase, just take the first step” – start where you’re at and trust in your capabilities to do great things!

How many hours of sleep do you get (or try to) on a daily basis?

I'm the kind of person who enjoys sleeping in, having day naps and having a good sleep overall. So I always try to get 8 hours of sleep.

What’s on your nightstand?

Less is more. I only have my rosary, my two rescued dogs teeth in resin (I know, it’s weird but I wanted to sort of have a keepsake from when they were puppies), water and about 10 self help books. Walk us through your bedtime routine. I tie my hair into a bun, cleanse my face and attempt to unwind with some reading to relax my mind. Another crucial and soothing step in my routine is using a gua sha on my face, alleviating tension and inducing a blissful state. Pair that with the comfort of my silky, cloud-like Half Asleep pajamas, and it feels like stepping into heaven. My personal favorite is their Long Sleeve Ruffle Pant Set!

What is the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning?

I cherish unhurried mornings, with sundays being my absolute favorite. What I aim for is to wake up slowly, take a moment to say hi and cuddle my pups, and then indulge in the most delicious coffee while settling back into bed for a bit longer.

What’s your go-to midnight snack?

Hands down: cereal!
